The Goya Boycott: What does it mean?

Goya is an American Food Producing Company that was founded in 1936 by Carolina Casal. On July 9, 2020, Goya's current CEO, Robert Unanue, praised President Donald Trump by calling him an "incredible builder".(The Washington Post)

This angered many people including: celebrities, politicians, and activists. They didn't approve of Unanue's political stance. They felt that Unanue's political stance was a betrayal to the Hispanic-Immigrant community due to Trump's racist remarks and deportation policies (Vox). Trump supporters, on the other hand, praised Unanue and encouraged buying Goya products.

This caught the attention of the Trump Family. On Tuesday July 14, Ivanka Trump posted a picture in which she posed with a can of Goya Black Beans.

On July 15, 2020, President Trump also posted a picture with Goya Products. Many were surprised since the endorsement of any company or product by someone in office could be illegal or unethical.

Many began to boycott Goya products altogether. While others believe that boycotting the products could put many out of work.

Boycotts aren't always successful either. They don't always have a significant impact. For Example, conservatives boycotted Nike once and company is still up and running.

Some argue that the boycott silences Unanue and affects his freedom of speech. However, whether people buy a Goya product or not doesn't affect the CEO's freedom of speech. (National Review) Only time can tell if the Goya Boycott will have a significant impact, but it truly shows the importance of politics in american lives.
