What does Hispanic mean? A Hispanic person is someone who comes from or is descendant of a Spanish-speaking country. Every year, Americans observe the National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and the contributions of the American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

This observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and concluding on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402 (www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov)

Moreover, September 15 is important because on this day it is celebrated the independence of Latin American Countries; Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Also, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18. Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is celebrated on October 12, falls within the 30-day period.

Some of the Latino celebrities that will be paying tribute to those that came before them are:

Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez, Bad Bunny, Shakira, Maluma, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony,

Eva Longoria, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

In conclusion, it’s time to applaud all the Hispanics that are working hard to make all of their

countrymen feel proud.
