Pancakes: A Timeless Breakfast Treat

There’s nothing more delicious for breakfast than pancakes, but how did everything started? In

the following paragraphs, it will be explained in details.


The origin of Pancakes:


The history of Pancakes goes back to about 30,000 years ago during the Stone Age. Many

researchers have found pancake remains in the stomach of Otzi the Iceman, dating back to 5,300

years.


Additionally, in ancient Rome and Greece pancakes were made from wheat flour, olive oil, honey and curdled milk. Poets like Cratinus and Magnes wrote about pancakes in their poetry and Shakespeare mentions them in his famous plays. During the Renaissance Era, pancakes were flavored with spices, rosewater, sherry, and apples. (www.kateskitchenkc.com)


The name of “Pancakes” started during the 15 th century but became a standard in America until

the 19th century. Before that, they were called Indian cakes, hoe cakes, johnnycakes, journey

cakes, buckwheat cakes, griddle cakes, and flapjacks. The early American pancakes were made

with buckwheat or cornmeal. It is said, that even President Jefferson loved them so much that in

fact he sent a special recipe to his home town from the White House. (www.kateskitchenkc.com)


Pancake Varieties:


There are a lot pancake varieties throughout the world. For example, in Africa they are known as

Injera, which is a yeast-risen flatbread with a unique slightly and spongy texture. It is made out

of teff flour and has become a national dish in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Pancakes are famous in most

the African countries.


Also, pancakes are common in Asia. The Chinese pancakes may be savory or sweet and are

made with dough rather than batter. The dough used for this pancakes consists basically of water,

flour, and vegetable oil.


These were a few examples of the some varieties of pancakes in the world.


Pancake Syndrome?


It may sound funny, but “pancake syndrome” is a medical condition. It happens in tropical

regions when the flour used in pancakes has been contaminated by mites and causes the

consumers to have an allergic reaction.


Pancake Day!!!


There is actually a day to eat pancakes. Shrove Tuesday or better known as (Fat Tuesday) is

usually the holiday of fasting before Lent. Back in time, during lent people were not allowed to

eat animal products like milk, butter, and eggs in order to prevent these items to go on waste

these were cooked in stall of pancakes. The pancakes were consumed in large amounts and for

that same reason it earned the rightful name of Pancake Day.


Lastly, every time is perfect to enjoy some delicious pancakes with syrup in company of your

loved ones. Yummy!!!
