High temperatures are making everyone crazy. This summer is a good opportunity to enjoy a refreshing cup of Hisbiscus water. Your family will enjoy it and it is also a great way to spend time together.
Hisbiscus Tea (Agua de Jamaica) is a typical agua fresca that is common in Mexico usually to accompany the mid-day meal. This tea is sweet, tart, delicious and very refreshing all at the same time.
Steps:
Start with two cups of Hisbiscus flowers. Fresh flowers are good because they produce the best tasting.
Add the Hisbiscus flowers to 2 quarts of water. Make sure you add the flowers to cold water.
Bring the water to a boil and as soons as it boils reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.
After the 10 minutes pass, turn off the heat and allow the concentrate to cool.
When the flowers steep they absorb water and they sink into the bottom of pot. That’s how you know it is ready.
Pour the concentrate through a strainer to remove the flowers.
Pour the concentrate into a jar or pitcher. You will have 1 ½ quarts of concentrate at the end. Flowers tend to absorb a bit of water.
Drink Preparation:
For the drink preparation, pour 1/3 of the concentrate into a ½ gallon pitcher.
Add sugar and water to fill the pitcher. Stir to dissolve the sugar.
Serve over ice or well chilled.
Enjoy!!
