On August 5, 1930, Neil Alden Armstrong was born. He was the first human being to walk on the moon, also he was a naval aviator, test pilot and a university professor.
Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He was of German, Scottish, and Scots-Irish ancestry. He had two siblings, a younger sister June, and a younger brother, Dean. His love for flying started when his father took him to the Cleveland Air Races. He earned a student flight certificate at the age of sixteen. Also, he began studying Aeronautical Engineering at the age of 17. Armstrong graduated from Purdue University in 1955.
Furthermore, Neil was selected in 1962 to be part of the NASA’s second group of astronauts who flew on the two- seat Gemini missions to test out space technology and the three-seat Apollo missions that took 12 people to the surface of the moon. His first flight in command was in March 1966 the sixth mission of that series.
In January 1969, Armstrong was selected to command the mission of walking in the moon. He descended Eagle’s lander and put his left foot upon the surface of the moon at 10:56 p.m. Once he was in the moon, his first words were; That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for a mankind.” The exploration of the moon’s surface lasted 2 hours and 36 minutes and 48.5 pounds (22 kilograms) of material from the moon’s surface was collected.
Neil Armstrong died on August 25, 2012 at age 82.
