COVID-19: What the Famous 6% Really Means

On September 2, 2020, the CDC updated their website with data about patients that died from COVID-19. A piece of data they released was widely misinterpreted.

People claimed that only 9,000 cases actually died from the virus and that the other cases were people who were going to die anyways.

Many were quick to attack the CDC and say they've been lying about the death count, but what do these numbers really mean?

Dr. Mikhail Varshavski, most commonly known as Dr. Mike, spoke out about this controversy. He says that 100% of the deaths from COVID-19 are important. In his video, he stated the following:

"94% of the deaths related to COVID-19 had several causes of death listed on the death certificate, and that's actually not that surprising. It is very rare for an individual to have a single thing listed on their death certificate because for those of us who actually fill out death certificates, we know we put a primary cause of death, as well as contributing causes of death... that doesn't mean it wasn't COVID-19 that led to your death."

Putting this into perspective, COVID-19 kills the most vulnerable which means that people with pre-existing medical conditions are obviously going to make up the majority of the COVID-19 deaths. However, just because these people weren't 100% healthy, doesn't mean that COVID-19 didn't cause their death. These people would not have died if they hadn't been infected with the virus. The virus is what triggered an immune response, and the patients already weak body was not able to successfully fight off the virus.

So, If I don't have a pre-existing medical condition, I shouldn't be worried about infection?

Well, yes and no. Most people are able to fight off the virus like a flu, but the virus spreads really quickly. Even though you will most likely survive, you may infect someone with weaker immune system that will not be able to fight it off. That's why they encourage everyone stays home. They want to be able to keep the virus away from the vulnerable.
