The 2020 presidential election is one of the greatest, most important elections in American history. After an eventful year filled with social unrest and a deadly pandemic, the American people are anxious to find out who will be their next leader.
The republican party nominated the current president Donald J. Trump to run alongside the current vice president Mike Pence. The democratic party nominated former vice president Joe Biden to run alongside California's senator Kamala Harris. Third-party candidates will also be running.
Who is Donald Trump?
Donald Trump was born on June 14, 1946 in Queens, New York. His family's wealth increased significantly post-war. They ran a real-estate business.
At thirteen years old, his parents chose to send him to the New York Military Academy. There, he rose to be start athlete and student leader. He graduated in 1964.
In 1964, he enrolled into Fordham University. He studied there for two years and then transferred to the University of Pennsylvania. There, he finished his education, and graduated with a degree in Economics. During his college years, he worked with his father in real estate.
Trump followed his father's footsteps and went into Real Estate and Business. His businesses include The Trump Organization, Trump Tower, and his casinos in Atlantic City.
In 1977, he married his first wife Ivana Trump. Together, they had three children: Donald Trump Jr, Ivanka Trump, and Eric Trump. Donald Trump Jr and Eric Trump currently are executive vice presidents of the Trump Organization. Ivanka is an adviser to her dad during his presidency.
In 1993, he married his second wife, Marla Maples. They already had a daughter, Tiffany Trump. They were together for four years, and then decided to get a divorce.
In 2005, he married his third and current wife, Melania Trump. She was a Slovenian model prior to their marriage. In 2006, they welcomed their son Barron Trump into the family.
In 2004, Trump began starring in NBC's reality series The Apprentice. In 2015, he began his career in politics. In 2016, he joined the Republican party and ran against Democratic Candidate Hillary Clinton. He won the election and became the 45th president of the United States.
In 2020, he is running for reelection against Democratic Candidate Joe Biden.
Who is Joe Biden?
Joseph Robinette Biden was born on November 20, 1942 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He was raised in both Scranton, Pennsylvania and New Castle County, Delaware.
In 1965, he graduated from University of Delaware. In 1968, he obtained his law degree from Syracuse University in New York. He returned to Delaware to work as an attorney for a while. Later, he turned to politics and served in the New Castle County council for two years. In 1972, he was elected as senator. At the time, he was only 29 years old which makes him one of the youngest senators in history.
He married his first wife Neilia Hunter in 1966. In 1972, one month after being elected into the senate, his wife and infant daughter died in a car crash. His two sons were also injured.
After almost cutting his political career short, he was reelected into the senate six more times. He became Delaware's longest serving senator.
In 1977, he married his second and current wife, Jill Jacobs. Together they had a daughter.
In 1988, he pursued Democratic Presidential nomination but eventually withdrew from the campaign. In 2008, he also tried to run for president but eventually withdrew after placing fifth in the Iowa Democratic caucus. However, he eventually emerged to become Barack Obama's Vice-presidential running mate.
Obama and Biden were elected in 2008 and then re-elected in 2012. On January 12, 2017, Obama awarded him the presidential medal of freedom. In 2016, he advocated for democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. In 2020, he is running against Donald Trump.
